Is This For Me?

βœ… You'll love this if…

You want an easy-drinking, budget 100% rye β€” soft caramel, vanilla and toasted grain with gentle rye spice β€” that's a reliable, inexpensive mixer for Old Fashioneds and Manhattans and pleasant enough to sip neat.

β›” Maybe skip if…

You want a bold, high-proof, spice-driven rye. At 80 proof it's light and sweet-leaning, and it can get overpowered in Campari- or vermouth-heavy cocktails.

What It Tastes Like

πŸ‘ƒ

Nose

Toasted grain and cereal with vanilla, caramel and butterscotch, a floral honey/honeysuckle lift, and a touch of dried fruit.

πŸ‘…

Palate

Caramel and vanilla over toasted rye grain, with black pepper, cinnamon and light baking spice; soft and creamy.

πŸ”₯

Finish

Short-to-medium β€” clove, cinnamon and oak with vanilla and a mild peppery rye fade.

Best Ways to Enjoy

🍸

Old Fashioned

Its best use β€” the caramel-vanilla sweetness needs only bitters; a reliable budget rye Old Fashioned.

πŸ₯ƒ

Manhattan

Solid and clean; the soft spice can sit behind the vermouth, but it mixes smoothly.

🧊

Neat / On Ice

Pleasant and easy at 80 proof β€” a soft, sweet everyday pour rather than a sipping showpiece.

πŸ’§

Whiskey Sour

The sweet, creamy profile blends smoothly with lemon and sugar; a dependable budget sour.

πŸ’‘ Pro Tip: A go-to budget mixing rye β€” it shines in an Old Fashioned or Whiskey Sour. In bitter, spirit-forward drinks like a Boulevardier a higher-proof rye holds up better.

Price & Value

$20–$32
Launched around $18; commonly low-$20s, up to ~$32 in some markets

Value is the whole story here. Distilled at Alberta Distillers as a genuine 100% rye β€” a clear step up in rye character from the corn-based CC 1858 blend that shares the name β€” it's widely praised as one of the best value ryes on the shelf, with a stack of awards to match. If you want more spice and intensity for a bit more money, step up to Lot 40; if you just need a dependable, inexpensive rye for cocktails, this over-delivers. A True 100% Rye Behind a Familiar Name

Canadian Club is best known for the corn-heavy CC 1858 blend, but the 100% Rye is a different animal. Launched in Canada in 2014 as Chairman's Select 100% Rye and rolled into the US in 2016, it's distilled at Alberta Distillers in Calgary β€” a distillery that has spent decades mastering rye β€” then bottled under the Canadian Club label. For around $20, it's one of the easiest ways to get a genuine all-rye whisky in the glass.

Aroma & Palate

The nose leans soft and sweet: toasted grain and cereal with vanilla, caramel and butterscotch, a floral honey lift and a touch of dried fruit. The palate follows suit β€” caramel and vanilla over toasted rye grain, with black pepper, cinnamon and light baking spice. It drinks smooth and creamy, and while the rye spice is present, it's noticeably gentler than the punchy American 95/5 ryes; this is an approachable, easygoing style rather than a bold one.

Finish & Value

The finish is the main compromise β€” short-to-medium and light, with clove, cinnamon, oak and vanilla fading fairly quickly at 40% ABV. But judged on price, it over-delivers: critics have been unusually kind (Whisky Advocate named it a value pick at 91 points as Chairman's Select), and it's collected a shelf of awards including 2024 World Whisky Awards Gold. For a genuine 100% rye at this price, that's remarkable.

Our Verdict

Canadian Club 100% Rye is a soft, sweet, grain-forward rye that punches above its bargain price. It won't satisfy drinkers chasing big proof and aggressive spice, but as an inexpensive everyday sipper and β€” especially β€” as a mixing rye for Old Fashioneds, Manhattans and sours, it's hard to beat for the money.

Frequently Asked Questions

❓ Is Canadian Club 100% Rye actually 100% rye?

Yes. Unlike the corn-based CC 1858 blend, this expression is made entirely from rye grain, distilled at Alberta Distillers in Calgary.

❓ What proof is it?

80 proof / 40% ABV. It carries no age statement but, under Canadian rules, is aged a minimum of three years.

❓ Is it the same as CC Chairman's Select 100% Rye?

Yes β€” it's sold as Chairman's Select 100% Rye in Canada and simply Canadian Club 100% Rye in the US. Same whisky.

❓ Is it good for cocktails?

Very β€” it's a popular budget mixing rye, best in an Old Fashioned, Manhattan or Whiskey Sour. Its soft spice can get lost in bitter, spirit-forward drinks.

❓ How much does it cost?

Usually around $20–$25 in the US, up to roughly $32 in some markets.
