Green River spent nearly forty years as a ruin. The distillery was founded in Owensboro in 1885, held DSP-KY-10, and by 1907 called itself the most advertised whiskey in the world under the slogan "The Whiskey Without A Headache." Then a 1918 fire took forty thousand barrels in three hours, distribution ended in 1955, and the site sat abandoned from 1956 until 1993. Reconstruction started in 2014, distilling resumed on site in 2016, and in February 2024 the revived company finally put out a rye. This is that bottle — and unusually for the price bracket, it is genuinely their own liquid rather than a sourced barrel with a story printed on the label.

Aroma & Flavor

The nose is the first place this whiskey declines to behave like its mash bill suggests. A 95% rye recipe usually announces itself with dill and pepper; here you get cinnamon and baking spice first, then a bright orange peel note, fresh mint, rye bread, and brown sugar sitting underneath. Only one of the fifteen independent reviews we surveyed named dill at all, which is worth saying plainly — if you buy 95/5 ryes expecting that signature, this one is not it.

The palate follows the same script. Orange peel and honey lead, then rye spice, caramel, black pepper and toasted oak arrive together rather than in sequence, with green apple and a slightly odd bubblegum note that four separate reviewers flagged independently. That bubblegum is the tell for this bottle — it is unusual enough to identify it blind. Texture is better than the proof implies; several reviewers singled out a viscous mouthfeel as a Green River house trait, though one credible dissenter called it medium-thin.

Finish & Overall Impression

The finish is the weakest link and the most contested point. Soft oak, lingering rye spice and cinnamon fade out over a medium length, with a dry citrus edge at the very end. Reviewers split three ways on how long it lasts — three called it long, five medium, two short. Our read is squarely medium, and the honest criticism is that the 95 proof leaves you wanting a little more density. This is a whiskey that ends politely rather than emphatically.

Taken whole, it is an approachable, sweet-leaning, citrus-forward Kentucky rye that trades intensity for drinkability. Cocktail Versatility

It mixes well without dominating. Manhattans and Old Fashioneds are its natural home — the orange-peel note complements sweet vermouth rather than competing with it — and it makes a clean, bright Whiskey Sour. Boulevardiers are where the gentleness starts to cost it; against Campari the rye backbone thins out, and something in the high-rye camp with more proof behind it, such as Wild Turkey 101 Rye, holds the drink together better.

Green River Rye is one of the better everyday ryes to arrive under $35 in recent years, and it is worth buying for the transparency alone — distilled, aged and bottled on the same Kentucky campus, with the mash bill and barrel age published openly. What it is not is a high-intensity rye, and buyers who cross-shop it against Pikesville 110 should know they are choosing approachability over power.
