The Dant Family, Back on Their Own Land
Joseph Washington Dant started distilling in 1836, reportedly by hollowing out a poplar log to make a still — which is where Log Still Distillery gets its name. Wally Dant and his cousins rebuilt on the family's old Nelson County distillery ground, reviving DSP-KY-47 from the historic F.M. Head Distillery. The Monk's Road name comes from the winding road past the Abbey of Gethsemani (the distillery is careful to note it has no affiliation with the abbey).
The rye arrived in October 2024 at 100 proof, with Log Still highlighting estate-grown Kentucky Heritage rye and limestone water. It took a Bronze at the 2024 International Wine & Spirit Competition.
Aroma & Palate
This is a soft, dessert-leaning rye rather than a sharp, peppery one. The nose leads with dried apricot and baking spice over caramel, with a youthful cereal-grain note the IWSC judges also picked up. The palate follows with baking spice and cinnamon over burnt sugar and caramel, black pepper warmth and light toasted oak. The texture is the standout — genuinely silky and viscous — and the finish is long and earthy with delicate vanilla, the one attribute that two independent sources agree on without one copying the other.
What's conspicuously missing is the classic rye herbal register: no dill, no mint, no eucalyptus in any account we could find. Combined with the sweetness and softness, that makes this an approachable, gateway-friendly rye rather than a classicist's spicy one.
