Penelope Straight Rye Review: The Short Answer

The RyeCentral Consensus Score for Penelope Straight Rye is 3.3/5.

Penelope Straight Rye is the core rye in Penelope's Classic Series, distilled at Ross & Squibb in Lawrenceburg, Indiana and released in June 2026. It is bottled at 92 proof (46% ABV) from a 93% rye, 7% malted barley mash bill, with no age statement. What defines it is the herbal register: spearmint runs through the nose and palate, with dill on the aroma and a wave of rye spice, citrus and brown sugar behind it. Oak barely registers. It is an approachable, mint-forward rye built for mixing and easy sipping rather than depth. Full tasting notes, prices and comparisons follow below.

Is This For Me?

✅ You'll love this if…

You want the classic herbal rye register — spearmint, wintergreen and dill — at an everyday price. It is soft at 92 proof, genuinely easy to drink, and the 93% rye mash bill gives it real rye character without sharpness. A strong, cheap mixer.

⛔ Maybe skip if…

You want oak, age or weight. Six of nine reviewers found no wood on the palate at all, mouthfeel splits between "thin" and "amazing", and there is no age statement. Reviewers broadly land on competent rather than memorable.

What It Tastes Like

👃

Nose

Spearmint leads, with clear dill behind it, then rye spice, brown sugar, bright citrus and a touch of ginger.

👅

Palate

Rye spice through the middle, mint running cool alongside it, with citrus, brown sugar, caramel and black pepper.

🔥

Finish

Medium — spearmint and wintergreen fading into pepper and lingering rye spice, drying gently at the end.

Best Ways to Enjoy

🍸

Manhattan

Where the herbal register earns its keep — the mint and rye spice cut through sweet vermouth cleanly.

🥃

Old Fashioned

Brown sugar and caramel are already there, so go light on the syrup and let the spearmint show.

💧

Whiskey Sour

The citrus on the palate — lemon, orange rind — makes this a natural fit. A genuinely good cheap sour.

🧊

Neat

Easy at 92 proof, with no burn reported anywhere. Pleasant, though the light body shows most here.

💡 Pro Tip: At $35 with a 93% rye mash bill, this is a mixing rye first. The mint is its signature — lean into it with a Manhattan rather than burying it under Campari.

Price & Value

$34.99–$38.99
$34.99 SRP; typically $35–$39 at online retail

This is the strongest thing about the bottle. A 93% rye mash bill at 92 proof for around $35 is a genuinely competitive everyday price, and nobody reviewing it has complained about value. Reviewers converge on "competent" rather than "memorable" — Breaking Bourbon's summary, that it is "not overly deep and is far from being noteworthy, but the sip it delivers is good enough to please most," is about as representative as a single sentence gets. If you want more oak and weight at a similar price, our Rittenhouse Bottled-in-Bond is the obvious comparison; for more options in this band, see best value rye whiskeys.

A Bourbon Brand's Rye

Penelope built its name on four-grain bourbon, so a core rye in the Classic Series is a statement of intent rather than a side project. It arrived in June 2026 at 92 proof, sourced from Ross & Squibb in Lawrenceburg — the Indiana distillery behind a great many of the ryes on our shelves — on a 93% rye, 7% malted barley mash bill. At $34.99 it sits directly against the everyday benchmarks.

Aroma & Palate

The defining note is spearmint, and it is not subtle. Five of nine reviewers find mint on the nose and six find it on the palate; one described the first sip as setting off "an earthquake of spearmint with an even bigger aftershock of wintergreen." Behind it sits dill — reported by three independent reviewers, one calling it "heavy" — then rye spice, brown sugar, citrus and a little ginger. The palate keeps the herbal thread going and adds citrus in a candied form: lemon peel, orange rind, lemonade powder. Brown sugar and caramel carry the sweetness, with black pepper at the edges.

Two things are conspicuously missing. Oak barely appears at all — only two of nine reviewers found wood on the palate, which is both the weakest-supported reading on this page and entirely consistent with a young, unaged-stated rye. And nobody reports heat. At 92 proof there is no burn language anywhere in the corpus, which is why our heat score is low despite the proof.

Where The Brand And The Reviewers Disagree

Penelope's own copy promises "bright aromatics of spearmint and citrus zest." Half of that holds up superbly — spearmint is the best-corroborated claim about this whiskey. The citrus zest does not. Only two of nine reviewers found any citrus on the nose, and one of those wrote directly beneath a reprinted press release. Citrus is real here, but it is a palate event, not an aroma.

More interesting is what the brand leaves out. Dill appears nowhere in Penelope's marketing, yet three independent reviewers plus a retailer customer put it squarely on the nose. For a rye that otherwise reads as approachable and mixer-friendly, that classic dill-and-mint signature is arguably its most distinctive feature.

Our Verdict

A well-priced, herbal, mint-forward rye that does the everyday job well and does not pretend to more. The critics who liked it liked it for value and drinkability; those who didn't wanted more weight and more wood. At $35 that trade is an easy one to accept — just do not expect depth.

Strong critic coverage, thin crowd. This score is compiled from nine independent scored sources — but almost all of them are critics and publications. The public rating pools are nearly empty: three ratings at one major retailer, and essentially nothing elsewhere yet. The critic average sits around 3.3 while that tiny crowd pool sits lower, a gap that rests on three votes and should not be read as a real disagreement. The bottle only launched in June 2026, so expect the community side to fill in. Add your notes below and help sharpen it.

Frequently Asked Questions

❓ Who makes Penelope Straight Rye?

It is a Penelope Whiskey release, distilled at Ross & Squibb (formerly MGP) in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Unlike many sourced ryes, Penelope discloses both the distillery and the full mash bill.

❓ What's the mash bill and proof?

93% rye and 7% malted barley, bottled at 92 proof (46% ABV). That is a genuinely high-rye recipe — there is no corn in it at all.

❓ How old is it?

There is no age statement. Several retailers list it as 7 to 9 years old, but Penelope has never confirmed that and at least one reviewer suspects it is closer to the four-year minimum required of a "straight" whiskey. We don't repeat the claim as fact.

❓ Is it spicy?

Moderately. Rye spice is present in eight of nine reviews but is repeatedly described as restrained — "not overly spicy," "without it being too sharp." The dominant character is herbal and minty rather than peppery.

❓ How is it different from Penelope Toasted Rye?

Different whiskey entirely. Toasted Rye is a 95% rye, 100-proof annual release finished in a heavily toasted barrel, and it has since been archived. This is the 92-proof Classic Series core rye at a much lower price.

❓ Where can I buy Penelope Straight Rye online?

Use the Where to Buy section on this page — it lists our current online retail partners and includes a ZIP finder for local stores. We re-check every partner monthly, so the listings reflect what is actually in stock rather than a fixed list. Shipping rules for spirits vary by state and you must be 21 or older to purchase.

❓ How much does Penelope Straight Rye cost?

Expect roughly $35 to $39 for a 750ml bottle. It launched at a $34.99 SRP, which is also the guide price shown at the top of this page, and online retailers currently sit between that and about $39. Check the Where to Buy section for live offers.
