What It Tastes Like
Nose
Vanilla and caramel lead, with warm cinnamon, a clear green lift of mint and dill, and orange peel behind them.

The bottle that got replaced for being too polite
Sagamore Spirit launched this whiskey in May 2016 and proofed it to 83 for a reason that had nothing to do with the liquid: Interstate 83 is the road their spring water travels from the 1909 spring house at Sagamore Farm down to the Baltimore distillery. It was a good story. It was also, by the near-unanimous verdict of everyone who reviewed the bottle, about ten proof points short.
What is in the glass is a genuine Maryland-style rye. Sagamore contracted MGP in Indiana to distil two rye mash bills to their specification — one high-rye, one low-rye — then dumped, mingled, proofed and hand-bottled them in Baltimore. The result is herbal in a way most American rye is not. Dill shows up in half of the independent reviews, and where it does not, mint, eucalyptus, wintergreen or a plain grassy note stands in its place. That green streak is the bottle's signature and the reason it is worth remembering.
Where it falls down
Seven of the twelve independent reviewers volunteered some version of the same complaint without being asked: thin, watery, soft, lacking oomph, "proofed out". Two dissented and found a medium body, so it is not unanimous — but it is the strongest single signal in everything written about this whiskey. The finish is short by most accounts. The heat is close to nonexistent, which is either the bottle's best feature or its worst depending on why you bought it.
Critics and drinkers disagreed, sharply
This is the unusual part. The crowd rates it 3.9; the critics rate it 3.2 — a gap of 0.68 on a five-point scale, wide enough that a single averaged number hides more than it tells you. Drinkers found an inexpensive, easy, characterful rye and rated it accordingly. Reviewers tasting it alongside cask-strength competition found it underpowered. Both are right about different questions, and which one applies depends on whether you are pouring it or judging it.
How much the score leans on one source
The 3.7 rests on ten sources that need no scale conversion, weighted by sample size. One of them — a retail pool of 2,781 ratings — carries enough weight that removing it drops the figure to 3.5. That is a real dependency and worth knowing. The number is honest; it is not settled.
Should you buy one
If you find it near $30 and you want a soft, herbal, low-burn rye to drink neat or in a tall mix, it holds up. If you want the same Maryland character with structure underneath it, the 93-proof successor is the better bottle, and Sagamore's Cask Strength is better still. For a comparable budget rye with considerably more grip, Rittenhouse Bottled-in-Bond is the obvious alternative.
