The Bartender Who Changed the Sazerac

Thomas H. Handy ran the Sazerac Coffee House in New Orleans and is credited with the single most consequential edit in American cocktail history: swapping the Sazerac's base spirit from cognac to rye whiskey. Buffalo Trace named its Antique Collection rye after him, and it has been released every autumn since 2006 — uncut, unfiltered, and at whatever proof the barrels happen to land on.

The 2018 came in at 128.8 proof from 73 hand-picked barrels. Buffalo Trace is unusually forthcoming about the specifics: the barrels went in at 125 proof in spring 2012, sat on the third and sixth floors of Warehouses I and L, lost a quarter of their contents to evaporation, and came out six years and four months later at a higher proof than they went in. What the distillery will not tell you is the mash bill. It publishes the states the grain came from and stops there.

Aroma & Palate

The nose leads with aromatic rye spice over fresh-cut oak and cedar, with herbal, almost bitters-like botanicals, some vanilla, and dark fruit underneath. The palate is the reason this whiskey exists: Breaking Bourbon described it as "a cannonball run of rye spice, pepper, allspice," and every single reviewer we tracked agreed on the intensity. Caramel and brown sugar sit underneath, barrel char runs through the middle, and the finish is long and pepper-driven with cardamom and a drying, tobacco-like edge.

The Handy That Wasn't Jet Fuel

Handy has a reputation for brutality, and the 2018 is the year reviewers said it eased off. Breaking Bourbon put it best: "while still high in proof and quite warm in the finish, it doesn't come off like the jet fuel it usually does." Distiller called it "a bit hot without water, but smooth." Four of seven made some version of this observation. That does not make it a gentle whiskey — it is 128.8 proof and the heat peaks hard on the finish — but for this particular label it is the approachable one. Drinkhacker was the dissenter, calling it "scratchy on the throat" and wondering aloud why it was not bottled lower.

What Buffalo Trace Says vs What Reviewers Found

This is worth flagging. Buffalo Trace's own notes for the 2018 promise "allspice, teaberry and clove," and the brand page adds coconut and nutmeg. Across seven independent reviews, allspice and clove show up repeatedly — but teaberry, coconut and nutmeg appear zero times. Not once. Also absent from every review: dill, caraway, leather and brine, all of which you might reasonably expect from a Kentucky rye at this strength. The independent consensus is a narrower, spicier, less decorative whiskey than the marketing copy describes.

The Price Problem

At $99 in 2018 this was one of the great bargains in American whiskey. Today the same bottle lists between roughly $500 and $1,499, and the gap between those two numbers is ten times the entire original price. Our Verdict

A genuinely excellent barrel-proof rye and the most drinkable Handy of its era, wrapped in a price that has nothing to do with what is in the bottle. If you find one near the bottom of the range it is worth the experience; near the top it is a collector's purchase rather than a drinker's.
