Why rye works better than bourbon in a Boulevardier
The Boulevardier is a bitter-forward stirred drink built on equal parts whiskey, Campari, and sweet vermouth. Campari supplies aggressive bitterness and the vermouth supplies sweetness, so the whiskey's job is to push back with structure rather than sugar. Rye does that better than bourbon for three reasons:
Less residual sweetness. A high-corn bourbon can read syrupy once it meets sweet vermouth; rye's drier, grain-forward profile keeps the drink balanced instead of cloying.
Spice cuts the Campari. Rye's peppery, baking-spice character stands up to Campari's bitter orange and herbal bite, so the whiskey is still tasteable in the finished cocktail.
Higher proof means more presence. Bottlings in the 95-115 proof range — Wild Turkey Rare Breed, Knob Creek, Lot 40 Dark Oak — carry through the dilution of a stirred drink without disappearing.

How to build the perfect Boulevardier
The classic ratio is equal parts — 1 oz of each — but the rye-forward version many bartenders prefer bumps the whiskey so it keeps the upper hand against the Campari:
Rye-forward Boulevardier
1.5 oz rye whiskey (90 proof or higher)
1 oz Campari
1 oz sweet vermouth
Garnish: orange twist, oils expressed over the glass
Add everything to a mixing glass with ice, stir 20-30 seconds until well chilled, and strain into a chilled coupe or over a large cube in a rocks glass. Express an orange peel over the top and drop it in.
Sweet vermouth pairing
The vermouth matters as much as the whiskey. A richer, spice-driven vermouth such as Carpano Antica Formula or Cocchi Vermouth di Torino echoes rye's baking spice and stands up to Campari; a lighter style such as Dolin Rouge keeps the drink crisp and lets a high-proof rye lead. As a rule of thumb, match a bigger vermouth to a softer rye, and a lighter vermouth to a barrel-proof rye, so neither overpowers the other.
