Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Rye vs. Its Heaven Hill Siblings

All three of these ryes come off the same Heaven Hill mash bill — 51% rye, 35% corn, 14% malted barley — so the differences come down to proof, age, and price. Here's how the barrel proof release stacks up against Elijah Craig Straight Rye and Pikesville 110:

EC Barrel Proof Rye EC Straight Rye Pikesville 110
Proof / ABV 108 proof (54%) debut batch — varies by batch 94 proof (47%) 110 proof (55%)
Age 12 years 3 months (Batch A925) No age statement 6 years
Mash Bill 51% rye, 35% corn, 14% malted barley Same Same

Typical Price $70–$80 (MSRP $74.99) $30–$40 $50–$60
Community Score 4.7 / 5 4.0 / 5 4.3 / 5

The short version: the Barrel Proof Rye is the fully-loaded expression of a mash bill Heaven Hill has been refining for years — twice the age of Pikesville and uncut where the standard Elijah Craig Straight Rye is proofed down to an easy-sipping 94. If you like barrel-strength rye as a category, it's also worth comparing against Jack Daniel's Barrel Proof Rye, a higher-rye Tennessee take at a similar price. And at 108 proof, this bottle has more than enough backbone for a rye Manhattan.

This whiskey is versatile and can be enjoyed neat for those who love its intense flavors or in classic cocktails like an Old Fashioned, where its complexity can shine. Its tasting profile makes it a great choice whether you're celebrating a special occasion or simply savoring a quiet evening.

❓ What is the typical price range for Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Rye?

The price of Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Rye typically ranges from $70 to $80 (MSRP $75). While it may be on the higher end, many whiskey enthusiasts find the rich experience it provides — and each meticulously crafted release — to be well worth the investment.

❓ Is Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Rye suitable for beginners?

With its high proof and robust tasting profile, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Rye might be overwhelming for beginners. However, if you're adventurous and eager to explore bold whiskey flavors, it could be an exciting choice to start expanding your palate.

❓ Where can I find Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Rye?

Availability can vary, with some regions having limited access to this sought-after whiskey. Checking with local liquor stores, online retailers, or joining whiskey enthusiast communities can help you track down a bottle more easily. Each release often garners attention among collectors due to its small batch exclusivity.

❓ What proof is Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Rye?

It's bottled uncut and non-chill filtered, so the exact proof varies from batch to batch. The debut release, Batch A925, came in at 108 proof (54% ABV) — firmly barrel proof, but noticeably gentler than many cask-strength ryes that push into the 120s.

❓ How does Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Rye compare to Elijah Craig Straight Rye?

Both share the same 51% rye, 35% corn, 14% malted barley mash bill. The standard Elijah Craig Straight Rye is proofed down to 94, carries no age statement, and sells for around $30–$40. The Barrel Proof version is uncut, aged 12 years 3 months in its debut batch, and runs $70–$80 — a deeper, oakier, more intense take on the same DNA.

❓ What do Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Rye batch codes like A925 mean?

The letter indicates the batch order within the year and the digits give the month and year — so A925 was the first rye batch, released in September 2025. Heaven Hill has said new barrel proof rye batches will arrive three times a year, in January, May, and September, so the proof and age can shift slightly with each release.

Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Rye Batch A925 - An Oak-Silky Rye with Coffee and Maple Depth

Great rye product that I want to always have on my shelf.

The nose breathes of spent coffee grounds, toffee, citrus peel, dried cherries, stewed fruits and cola.

On the palate, baking spice sweetness comes through with maple syrup notes which quickly moves to brown sugar and Cinnamon Toast Crunch with very subtle herbaceous elements.

As another product designed to be approachable for bourbon fans, a pop of traditional rye spice on the backend culminates into an oak forward, silky finish which is amplified with a drop or two of water. Viscous mouthfeel throughout makes for an incredibly pleasant drinking experience.

Solid 4.5 rating.

Additional Notes: This is a little power house rye. I'm with the community of 4.5 and really feeling those flavors of cinnamon, vanilla and black pepper coming through and took me a while to sense the mint but it's there when you compare it and let your palate & nose identify it.
