Does single barrel mean cask strength?

Not necessarily. Many single barrel releases are proofed down with water before bottling to reach a target ABV. Some are bottled at full barrel proof (cask strength), but the terms are not interchangeable. If a bottle says both "single barrel" and "cask strength" or "barrel proof," it came from one barrel with no water added. Why do single barrel whiskeys vary so much?

Every barrel is a unique environment. Wood grain density, char level, warehouse position (higher floors are hotter, lower floors are cooler), seasonal temperature swings, and aging duration all affect the whiskey differently.
