Most rye whiskey uses raw rye. Chattanooga malts theirs — sprouts the grain, then kilns and roasts it, the way a brewer treats barley — and then does it three separate times at three different roast levels. Pale, caramel, chocolate. That is not a marketing flourish; it is a different category of whiskey, labelled Straight Rye Malt Whiskey on the bottle rather than straight rye, and it explains almost everything that follows in the glass.
The Cola Note Nobody Can Unsee
Across our nine scored sources, the most striking thing is how many landed on the same unusual descriptor without prompting. One independent reviewer found "cherry cola." Another wrote "cherry coke" twice in one review. A third called it "vanilla cola," and a fourth logged "ripe cherry." The distillery's own sheet says "cola spice." When four independent palates reach for a soft drink to describe a whiskey, that is a real signature, and it comes from the caramel and chocolate malts rather than from any barrel trick. Underneath it sits cocoa — one reviewer likened the whole thing to Mexican chocolate — plus crisp apple and a broad wash of baking spice.
Where the Rye Doesn't Bite
Here is the honest caveat. This does not taste like Kentucky rye, and several reviewers went out of their way to say so. One reviewer wanted "that strong, black pepper spicy kick" and found instead that malting had "toned down that peppery kick to the point where it is more of a whisper." Another was blunter: it "simply doesn't have that rye 'pop'." More telling still is what is absent. A leading whiskey magazine scored it 92 on its 100-point scale and named it to its Top 20 of 2020, and it has stayed in the core range ever since without the price running away. Buy it if you want cherry cola, cinnamon and dark malt at 99 proof with a real age statement; do not buy it expecting dill and pepper.
