Is This For Me?

✅ You'll love this if…

You want a sweeter, dessert-leaning rye — toasted oak, vanilla and crème brûlée, caramel and baking spice — that's easy to sip and shines in an Old Fashioned. One of the best noses in the category.

⛔ Maybe skip if…

You want a dry, bold, spice-driven rye, or you're price-sensitive. It's soft and oak-sweet rather than spicy, and at ~$55 it's roughly double the base Elijah Craig Rye.

What It Tastes Like

👃

Nose

Vanilla and crème brûlée over toasted oak, cinnamon baking spice, caramel-toffee, torched orange, and toasted almond.

👅

Palate

Vanilla and toasted oak with cinnamon, black pepper, milk chocolate, and brown-sugar sweetness.

🔥

Finish

Medium — dry toasted oak, black pepper and rye spice with lingering cinnamon and toffee sweetness.

Best Ways to Enjoy

🥃

Neat

Where it shines — the toasted-oak, vanilla and crème-brûlée nose is a real treat undiluted.

🍸

Old Fashioned

Its best cocktail — the sweet toasted oak and vanilla need only bitters and a touch of sugar.

🧊

On Ice

Pleasant, though the delicate toasted notes soften; a large cube is best.

💧

With Water

A few drops open the vanilla and orange; at 94 proof it doesn't need much.

💡 Pro Tip: Best neat or in an Old Fashioned where the toasted-oak sweetness is the star. In Campari- or vermouth-heavy drinks the delicate toasted notes tend to get buried.

Price & Value

$55–$70
MSRP $54.99; allocated, so street prices run a bit higher in some markets

The value question is the main debate around this bottle. At ~$55 it's roughly double the excellent base Elijah Craig Straight Rye, and reviewers are split on whether the toasted-barrel finish justifies the jump. What you're paying for is a genuinely lovely, dessert-forward nose and a smoother, oakier profile. If you love toasted-barrel ryes, compare it with Michter's Toasted Barrel Finish Rye; if you'd rather have intensity for the money, the cask-strength Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Rye is the pick.

Heaven Hill's Toasted Program Comes to Rye

After the success of Elijah Craig Toasted Bourbon, Heaven Hill brought the same idea to rye in 2024. They take fully mature Elijah Craig Straight Rye and give it a second maturation in a custom-toasted new oak barrel from Independent Stave — a long, hot toast that embeds extra vanilla, caramel and a whisper of smoke into the wood. Because the finishing barrel is new and charred, it legally keeps its "Kentucky Straight Rye" designation.

Aroma & Palate

The nose is the star and near-universally praised: vanilla and crème brûlée over toasted oak, with caramel-toffee, cinnamon baking spice, torched orange and a nutty almond-praline note. The palate follows the sweet, oak-forward path — vanilla, toasted oak and cinnamon with milk chocolate, brown sugar and a gentle peppery rye spice around the edges. It drinks soft and creamy at 94 proof, with the low-rye Kentucky mash bill keeping the spice mellow.

Finish & Overall Impression

The finish is the consensus weak spot — medium length, dry and oak-driven with black pepper, cinnamon and a little residual toffee. It's pleasant but simpler than the spectacular nose promises. Critics land it in the good-but-not-great band (Whisky Advocate 90, Distiller ~3.95/5), with most of the debate around the ~$55 price.

Our Verdict

Elijah Craig Toasted Rye is a genuinely enjoyable, dessert-leaning rye with one of the best noses around and a smooth, oak-sweet palate. It's a treat neat and superb in an Old Fashioned. Whether it's worth double the base rye comes down to how much you love toasted-barrel sweetness — but as a sipper, it delivers.

Frequently Asked Questions

❓ What makes it "toasted"?

Mature Elijah Craig Straight Rye is given a second maturation in a custom-toasted new oak barrel from Independent Stave, adding extra vanilla, caramel and a hint of smoke.

❓ What proof and mash bill is it?

94 proof (47% ABV), from Heaven Hill's 51% rye / 35% corn / 14% malted barley mash bill. No age statement.

❓ How is it different from Elijah Craig Straight Rye?

It's the same base rye given a toasted-barrel finish — sweeter, oakier and more dessert-like, at roughly double the price.

❓ Is it worth ~$55?

If you love toasted-barrel sweetness and a great nose, yes — it's a lovely sipper. If you want intensity or value, the base rye or EC Barrel Proof Rye give more per dollar.

❓ Is it still made?

Yes — it launched in July 2024 as a current, ongoing (though allocated) core Elijah Craig release. Availability varies by market.
