Three Jefferson's Ryes, One Name Each
Get the identification right before you read anyone's score, because Jefferson's has shipped three quite different ryes and the internet runs them together. There is the old 10-year, 94-proof Canadian-sourced rye, long discontinued. There is the current 88-proof Jefferson's Rye, a blend of straight ryes launched in May 2025. And there is this one: a no-age-statement American rye finished in cognac casks, released in 2021 and still made as a limited annual run. The 2025 blend did not replace it — the two coexist in the range.
One widely repeated claim we can put to bed: this is not a Canadian rye. The brand's own copy says "American Rye," and every independent source that names an origin says Kentucky. The Canadian bottle was the 10-year, and it is gone.
Aroma & Palate
The nose is the weakest part, and the agreement on that is unusual — three separate reviewers open by remarking how little it offers. Lean in and you get dried apricot and stone fruit, fresh oak, honey and molasses, with a violet-and-dandelion floral edge that belongs entirely to the cognac. The rye grain barely registers.
The palate is where the money went. It arrives thick and mouth-coating — one community taster called it "a full rich creamy profile more typical to a bourbon than a rye," which is the single most-repeated observation about this whiskey.
