Same Name, Different Whiskey

Start here, because it trips up almost every search result: the Jefferson's rye you can buy today is not the one most of the internet is reviewing. The old Jefferson's Straight Rye was a 94-proof, 10-year, 100% Canadian rye, and it has been out of production for years. What replaced it in May 2025 is Jefferson's Rye, labelled a "Blend of Straight Rye Whiskeys" — 88 proof, no age statement, built from 6-, 7- and 9-year straight ryes plus a slug of Jefferson's Ocean Rye, and split 70/30 between American and Canadian distillate.

If you find a glowing 92-point score or a decade-old blog post praising a minty 10-year, you are almost certainly reading about the discontinued bottle. This review is about the current one.

One further wrinkle, new since September 2026: Jefferson's has refreshed its packaging and now lists this rye as Jefferson's Triple Rye, in the same place in its line-up and with no specifications published beside it. The liquid reviewed here is the 2025 blend described above; the label on the shelf may now say Triple Rye.

Aroma & Palate

The Canadian component announces itself immediately. The nose is soft and sweet-leaning rather than sharp — chewy caramel first, vanilla just behind it, and a cool green lift over the top. It smells younger and gentler than the component ages suggest.

The palate leads with rye spice before settling into cinnamon and vanilla, with a cool mint note and a touch of cherry filling in the middle. At 88 proof there is no real heat to speak of — warming rather than sharp. The finish runs medium to medium-long, the cinnamon carrying through over a dry, herbal fade, and here the sources part company: the blind competition panel called it long and complex, while one of the named critics found it medium and a bit muddled.

A Note On What We Don't Know

We would rather be plain about this than quietly round the number up. Seventeen months after launch, only four sources publish a usable number for this bottle: one blind competition panel, two named critics, and one small community rating pool. The score on this page rests on those four, and it shifts by less than a tenth of a point if the most heavily weighted of them is removed — but four sources are not a consensus, they are an early signal, and the figure will move. It is worth adding that the critics and the drinkers do not quite agree here: on a like-for-like reading the critic scores sit about half a point above the community pool. Jefferson's also declines to publish a mash bill or name the distilleries behind the blend, so a good deal of the specification here is simply unavailable.

Our Verdict

On the evidence so far this is a pleasant, soft, minty rye that drinks well neat and asks very little of you — a reasonable $35 bottle with real age in the blend and a forgiving proof. It is not a spice-forward classicist's rye, and it is not a transparency showcase.
