Basil Hayden Two by Two Rye Review

Basil Hayden Two by Two Rye was a 2018 limited release built from four Kentucky whiskeys — two straight ryes and two straight bourbons, landing near 80% rye to 20% bourbon. Suntory Global Spirits now lists it under previous releases and says it is no longer in stores. At 80 proof the result is soft and oak-led, and the recurring verdict across independent reviewers is that it reads more like a gentle bourbon than a rye.

The nose leads with vanilla and oak over caramel and brown sugar, with the rye spice sitting behind them. The palate follows the same order — oak and vanilla, then caramel, rye spice, baking spice, a nutty note and a little pepper.

The finish is medium at best, drying toward oak and leather as the vanilla fades. A cube rounds the oak and brings the sweetness forward; neat, the 80-proof build gives the spice little to work with. It is a better cocktail whiskey than a sipper.

It sold for about $45 in 2018. Because it is discontinued, what is left sits with specialty retailers and on the secondary market: asking prices observed this month run from about $45 to $100, with one dead-stock listing far above that.

One thing worth saying plainly: the crowd and the critics disagree about this bottle more than on almost any rye we track. The two large user-rating pools behind the score — 187 ratings between them — average about 3.6/5, while the ten independent critic scores average about 2.6/5. The published figure is the whole pool weighted by sample size, and dropping the single biggest pool moves it about 0.3.

Whiskeys built the other way, with rye carrying the grain bill instead of sharing it with a second spirit, are gathered in the wider high-rye whiskey lineup.
