WhistlePig 10 Year vs Rittenhouse, Sazerac & Knob Creek Rye
Here is how the WhistlePig 10 Year proof, age, mash bill and price stack up against three benchmark American ryes. WhistlePig is the only bottle here carrying a full 10-year age statement and a 100% rye mash bill — which is exactly what its premium buys you.
| Whiskey | Proof / ABV | Age | Mash Bill | Typical Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WhistlePig 10 Year | 100 / 50% | 10 years | 100% rye | $70–$95 |
| Rittenhouse Bottled-in-Bond | 100 / 50% | Min. 4 years | Kentucky straight rye | $25–$32 |
| Sazerac Rye | 90 / 45% | ~6 years (NAS) | Kentucky straight rye | $30–$40 |
| Knob Creek 7 Year Rye | 100 / 50% | ~7 years | Kentucky straight rye | $35–$45 |
WhistlePig 10 Year vs Rittenhouse: both pour at 100 proof, but Rittenhouse is a $25–$30 bartender workhorse while WhistlePig adds six-plus years of barrel age and a 100% rye recipe. Against Sazerac Rye’s softer 90 proof and Knob Creek 7 Year Rye’s vanilla-and-oak profile, WhistlePig leans oldest and most structured — the sipping rye of the group rather than the mixing rye. All four sit in our 100-proof rye collection except the 90-proof Sazerac.
WhistlePig 10 Year Proof, Price & Tasting Notes at a Glance
WhistlePig 10 Year proof sits at a full 100 (50% ABV), and the WhistlePig 10 Year price typically runs $70–$95 for a 750 ml bottle. The WhistlePig 10 Year tasting notes reviewers report most often are baking spice, vanilla, caramel and toasted oak, layered over the pepper-forward backbone of a 100% rye mash bill. So is WhistlePig 10 Year worth it? For a 10-year age-stated rye that earned 96 points from Wine Enthusiast, most drinkers say the depth and long, warming finish justify the premium over younger, blended ryes.

Very sweet on the nose with strong hints of caramel, nutmeg and cinnamon which carries though on the front of the palate.
Medium heat swells on the front and middle of the palate with touches of honey, vanilla and a touch of herbaceous notes.
The finish brings a low amount of peppery spice that lingers.
There’s ample variety of flavor that likely will appeal to bourbon drinkers. There’s not especially smooth transitions between different parts of the palate with sharp spikes in flavor from front to middle to finish.
Overall, a 4.1 rating.
This is my go to choice for a nice rye old-fashioned. I like how the spice compliments the sweet when I mix it. Feels pretty strong and has a long finish on it. If I’m not using bourbon in my old-fashioned, this is definitely my go to first choice. It’s spicy full-bodied, but not sweet if you sip it on its own.
